The importance of protecting your brand’s value

Data loss is one of the greatest risks to business success. Whether it’s from malicious activities like hackers or rogue employees, or accidents like a misconfiguration or deletion, more than 73% of data loss originates internally.

And just how damaging can a data loss or corruption event be to your organization? Recent reports show that:

  • The cost of data loss can be $1.8 billion per 10 million records (source: Ponemom Institute)
  • Outages or performance issues can cost $5 million per hour (source: Randgroup)

As it is your responsibility to protect and secure your own Salesforce data, you must find the right solution to protect your data from a disaster (regardless of the source of loss). More on that…

Shared responsibility of protecting Salesforce data

We talk about this a lot here at Odaseva, because customers of SaaS platforms don’t always realize that they are responsible for protecting their organization’s SaaS data – not the platform. A 2022 survey of enterprise executives and managers with decision-making responsibility for SaaS data found that 25% mistakenly believed it wasn’t their responsibility to protect their SaaS data.

Take Salesforce for example – like most SaaS platforms, Salesforce embraces a ‘shared responsibility’ model. This means that Salesforce is responsible for the security and integrity of their platform, but that Salesforce’s customers are responsible for securing and managing the data generated.

And at the enterprise level, where SaaS data is mission-critical to business operations, it is paramount to identify and implement the right solutions for securing that data. That means a solution that not only backs up critical data frequently to minimize the risk of data being lost, but also ensures that this data can be recovered without error.

After all, backups are only useful if the backed up data can be restored. At Odaseva we call this “Prove your Recovery.” Let’s dive deeper into what that means.

How to “Prove your Recovery” for Salesforce data

Start by asking, are you recovery ready… or just backed up? There’s quite a difference between the two.

The following should be considered after data is backed up, but before a loss or corruption takes place:

  • Backup failure: is your data actually there, who’s verifying it, how often, is it configured correctly? Is your backup plan running at 100% at all times?
  • Recovery time matters: how quickly can you identify a loss or corruption incident and what point can you roll back to? How quickly can you get that data back into Salesforce?
  • Can you retrieve data that is complete, accurate, and actionable? Do you know what you’re missing? For example, can you retain parent-child relationships?
  • Data loss isn’t just a technical topic. It’s about losing trust, confidence, and your personal reputation. Do you have the right team in place to ensure this?

Designing a Well-Architected environment

Being recovery ready begins with designing a Well-Architected environment. Ultimately you are the experts of your Salesforce Org, but there are industry best practices to consider and align with, provided by Salesforce Well-Architected. Salesforce data recovery planning

So how do you ensure that you are ready for data loss or corruption events? How do you prove your recovery plan will be effective? Tyler discusses the details of the following in the webinar replay

  1. Define the data recovery plan
    • Assemble the Data Recovery Plan team prior to an incident occurring
    • Identify business-critical data
    • Document the plan
  2. Initialize the data recovery plan
    • Backup readiness
    • Audit, remediate, test
    • Restore readiness
    • Analyzing bypass strategies
  3. Maintain the data recovery plan
    • Maintain through restore tests
    • Maintain through continual optimization

Now when there is a data incident, you are prepared to:

  1. Start the recovery process
  2. Assemble the team
  3. Establish a timeline, assign stakeholders, and communicate the outage
  4. Determine when the incident occurred, what was lost, and your RPO
  5. Execute the restore process, handle errors
